The holidays are supposed to be a season of joy and gratitude, but for many families, they can also bring on a lot of stress. For us, traveling has become part of every Thanksgiving and Christmas. My family and I are always on the road, navigating the challenges of packing for five, managing holiday schedules, and trying to make the best of it while away from home. I know I’m not alone in this! So many moms I talk to feel torn between making memories with loved ones and avoiding the overwhelm that comes with holiday travel.

The Reality of Holiday Travel Stress

As much as we cherish our extended family gatherings, the logistics of traveling can make it feel like a marathon before the festivities even begin. And it’s not just the usual holiday prep; it's packing for a family of five, making sure the house is ready to leave, and coordinating all the small details like arranging pet care and holding mail.

If you’re a family that doesn’t travel, I applaud you! Whether it’s because your family lives nearby or you’ve drawn boundaries, staying home certainly has its perks. For those of us packing up each year, I’ve found that it’s essential to simplify and share the load to make these moments less chaotic and more meaningful. I don't have it all figured out, but I do have a couple of things for you to consider as well as a prayer for your busy, mama heart.

Tips to Lighten the Holiday Travel Load

1. Share the Packing Responsibilities

As my kids have grown, I’ve started giving each of them a list of what they need to pack, from outfits to pajamas to travel essentials. They even pack their car bags with activities. We talk about how long we’ll be gone and what will keep them entertained during the drive. Involving them helps reduce my load and gives them a sense of responsibility.

2. Set Realistic Timeframes

Knowing how long your family can comfortably be away is crucial. For us, three nights is the sweet spot. Whether we’re with my family or my husband’s, anything more and we start feeling out of sync. If your family has a similar threshold, don’t be afraid to establish a reasonable timeline that keeps everyone rested and content.

3. Choose a ‘Home Holiday’

While we travel for Thanksgiving and Christmas, Easter has become our holiday at home, and honestly, it’s my favorite! With no big gifts, no elaborate packing, and no logistics to juggle, Easter is refreshingly low-stress. We attend church, enjoy a quiet family dinner at our own table, and focus on the meaning of the day. The simplicity and ease make it feel extra special.

Finding Joy in the Simple Moments

If you’re feeling torn between tradition and tranquility this season, consider ways to simplify and share the work of holiday travel. You don’t have to shoulder everything, and a little planning goes a long way in reducing stress. We can still make the holidays memorable without sacrificing our sanity.

A Prayer for Holiday Peace

Lord, thank You for the gift of family and the chance to gather during this season. Help us to manage the busyness with grace, finding peace in the simple moments. May we bring joy to those around us and remember that the reason for these celebrations is Your love. Amen.
