A Prayer for Our Children's Future Spouses this Christmas

As the holiday season draws near, I find myself reflecting on family more deeply. Gathering with loved ones, filling the room with laughter and memories, is one of the most cherished gifts we have. It’s a blessing to celebrate together—extended families, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who have become family. But while I enjoy these moments, I often find my thoughts drifting to the future, wondering about what it holds for my children.

One day, perhaps, our family will look different. Our children will be grown, starting families of their own, and my husband and I might be the ones visiting their homes, sharing in the joy of their holiday traditions, maybe even surrounded by grandchildren. What will those days look like? Will our children be married? Will they find someone who loves them deeply, someone they can share their life and dreams with, as I’ve been so blessed to share with their dad?

I think about that “someone” who may one day become part of our family. Where are they right now? Are they part of a big family who gathers around a crowded table for Christmas? Or maybe they’re from a smaller family, or one that’s broken in some way, where holidays mean shuffling between different homes. Are they loved and cared for? Are they experiencing joy this Christmas?

Years ago, a dear friend shared with me the simple yet beautiful idea of praying for our children’s future spouses. It was such a new thought to me—praying for someone I didn’t know, someone who might one day hold my child’s heart. And yet, it makes perfect sense. I can’t be there for this person right now, but I can lift them up in prayer, entrusting them to God’s loving care. Wherever they are, whatever they’re doing, I can pray they feel loved, safe, and that they’re guided by His hand.

As we celebrate this Christmas, my heart is full of gratitude and hope for all the wonderful people our children will bring into our lives. Let’s pray together, not just for our own families, but for those who may one day be part of it.

A Christmas Prayer for Our Children’s Future Spouses:

“Lord, thank You for the love and joy You surround us with this season. As we celebrate, I lift up my children’s future spouses to You. Wherever they are, may they feel Your love and peace this Christmas. Let them grow up knowing they are treasured by You, and prepare them for the life You have planned for them. When the time comes, I pray they find each other, and that together they will be a light to those around them. Amen.”

This holiday, may we remember those near and dear to us, and those who will someday join us. May our prayers be a gift that reaches beyond ourselves, bringing love and hope to others—even those we haven’t met yet.
